Mockingbird by mcguan

I needed to flex some coloring muscles before I embark on a few commissions (and holidays) that will take me out of circulation for awhile, so here's a quick one of Marvel's Mockingbird for the Third Rail Design Lab Weekly challenge. I went back and forth on whether to make the S.H.I.EL.D. logo background red or blue, so I figured why not post one here and the other on my Tumblr page. Now if I could figure out how to make a poly-bagged-and-foil-variant digitally, I'd be just like the comic industry.

Created with PITT and Prismacolor pens, Adobe PS and Illustrator 5.5 and a reference shot for part of the pose from

Skyward by mcguan
I didn't know Jeremy Dale other than we followed each other here on dA ( thejeremydale ) and I had a chat once with him and his wife at C2E2, but that was enough to floor me when I heard the news that he had passed away this week at 35. So I felt compelled to take a crack at his characters Quinn and Jack from his book SKYWARD last night.

If you're interested in helping out his wife during this difficult time, there is a GoFundMe page set up to take donations here:
Murder Ballad by mcguan
Murder Ballad

This year’s BOO! HALLOWEEN STORIES is finally available for download on Comixology. 64 pages of story and art for only $1.99 - it’s all treat, no trick.

Inside you’ll find “Murder Ballad,” written by Ken Lowery and art by yours truly. It’s a prequel to the story we did in last year’s BOO! (also available on Comixology for you completists out there - you can see my process for the art on one of those pages right here) starring rock-n-roll siblings Johnny and June Valentine and the legendary Stagger Lee. And there's even a contest to win a page of my original art. Hop to it, kids!

7LA by mcguan

Last month on Twitter, Benito Cereno issued the challenge to assemble a seven-member, all-female Justice League. He ended up getting a lot of responses and several pretty spiffy drawings as a result, and after much delay, I present mine. I made the decision to draw them out as a team to see how they'd all look together, and yep, that's a team all right. (Also? Unfortunately and unintentionally overly caucasian and very blue-eyed brunette-y.) I've begun referring to them in my head as the Seven Lady Army (or 7LA), and have had a modified version of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" stuck in my head for two weeks, so I'm glad to finally move past that.

Here's the line-up:

Wonder Woman
Big Barda
Black Canary
Mary Marvel
Talia al Ghul

But before you start in with "Yeah, but how would even Talia work on this team?" or "What's with the high heels on Elasti-Girl?" head over to my Tumblr, where I explain all this and more

Editorial illustration, comic book art, graphic design, the back of a photocopied piece of paper, a bar napkin, whatever... I'm pretty much always drawing. And if I'm not, I'm thinking about what I should draw later.

Professionally I have a few editorial illustrations under my belt, and I have penciled (and on occasion inked) several comic books for companies like Moonstone Books, Markosia and Monkeybrain Comics. Including:

Lai Wan #1 - pencils
Airboy and the Air Fighters #1 & 2 - pencils and inks on the Airboy chapters

Smoke & Mirror (vol.1 no. 5) - pencils
Project Eon (issues 2 &3) - pencils

BOO! (Issue 2) "The Night The Dead Rocked Texas" - Pencils, Inks, Colors

Current Residence: Illinois
Operating System: Mac
Hey, look a journal! Forgot about these things.

I've been away from dA for a variety of reasons, one of which is that I was preoccupied illustrating one of the installments in Monkeybrain's new four-issue anthology series BOO! The first issue hits Comixology today, with the rest to follow over the next few Thursdays until Halloween.

My chapter is written by Ken Lowery (Co-founder of the Fake AP Stylebook) with lettering by TheIronRachel. Our chapter, titled "The Night The Dead Rocked Texas" and two other great stories - as well as some fantastic framing sequences by Calamity Jon Morris comes out next Thursday, Oct. 17.

You can find the whole series here - .99 an issue! Thanks in advance!

You mean like actual sequentials/paneled pages? Hmm... I'd have to figure out which ones I still like enough to show. ;)

I loved the textures you put on that piece. I had to download it to see the bigger size, so I could take it all in. Nicely done!
