Hey there Deviants - I just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who watches my page that might be interested, we are giving away a piece of original art I did from the latest issue of Monkeybrain's "BOO! Halloween Stories." All the details (and a look at the art) are at this link on my Tumblr page. This is an extension of the original contest, where we printed the wrong email address like a buncha boneheads. So as a mea culpa, I threw in a bonus sketch for the contest winner. Check it out and thanks for watching!

Editorial illustration, comic book art, graphic design, the back of a photocopied piece of paper, a bar napkin, whatever... I'm pretty much always drawing. And if I'm not, I'm thinking about what I should draw later.

Professionally I have a few editorial illustrations under my belt, and I have penciled (and on occasion inked) several comic books for companies like Moonstone Books, Markosia and Monkeybrain Comics. Including:

Lai Wan #1 - pencils
Airboy and the Air Fighters #1 & 2 - pencils and inks on the Airboy chapters

Smoke & Mirror (vol.1 no. 5) - pencils
Project Eon (issues 2 &3) - pencils

BOO! (Issue 2) "The Night The Dead Rocked Texas" - Pencils, Inks, Colors

Current Residence: Illinois
Operating System: Mac

Did a little experimenting with Copic and Photoshop techniques between phases of a commission.
Lila Cheney by mcguan
Lila Cheney
So about a year-and-a-half ago, I did a poster for the X-Men character Dazzler, and mentioned that the piece had been on hold because "it was meant to have a companion piece," but that piece was "on pause until I get ahead of my work list." Ha ha, good one, Past Me. No one ever gets ahead of their work list, ya dummy. Anywho - meet said companion piece. I've still been pretty swamped and this kept getting pushed aside until earlier this year when I tweaked it a bit. I finally just swapped in a new date and decided to post it.

The whole point of these two pieces was me trying to figure out how someone like the Disco-centric Dazzler would mesh with a rock goddess like Lila Cheney. Not sure I ever figured it out. Mostly in my head I equated Dazzler with someone like Emily Haines of Metric, while Lila was a Brody Dalle analog. Maybe a little Shirley Manson.

Created with PITT Pens, Copic Markers and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS 5.1. I had an easier time working in the names of Ms. Cheney's creators (Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod) than I did with Created-By-Committee Dazzler.

Supergirl by mcguan
Man alive, it's been cold enough to send a Kryptonian running for hot chocolate.

I drew a version of this last year during our oppressive Midwest winter, but my hands must have been too frozen because I didn't like that version much. Came across it during this current cold snap and thought I'd give it a re-do.

American Flagg! by mcguan
American Flagg!
Happy 2015! I'm readying for a move in the next month or so, so I've been going through some things lately, including a lot of my comics from the '80s, a.k.a. the peak Howard Chaykin era. Man alive, his American Flagg! books with First Comics and his Shadow mini-series at DC were (and still are!) something to study repeatedly, art and design-wise.

I'll probably be doing more of these quick character studies while my studio is in various states of disarray and I juggle between commissions and unpacking.

Thanks - I'm working on posting more soon-ish. And I DO take commissions actually. Just a little backed up at the moment.

No worries!  Makes me happy that you do take commissions as I will definitely be contacting you when you are not so swamped.  I really like the look you have going on.  it's refreshing as you don't see it all that often...or at least I don't.  heh

either way, keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more!  :)
